Kedah - Nyonya Cuisine at Restaurant Baba Leong

One of my lunch place is this -- Restaurant Baba Leong. Especially when we are having foreign visitor, this restaurant becomes a must-visit place to us.

Baba-Nyonya (also known as "Peranakan"), becoming one of the unique culture in Malaysia. In old time, the Chinese migrates to Malaysia from China and they get married with the local. Their descendants are known as Peranakan, where we called a female Peranakan "Nyonya" and a male "Baba".

Their food is very much similar to the Malay food, but they do serve pork. If you are a spicy person, this restaurant is definitely one of the best choice for you.

Some said, Penang Peranakan cuisine is different from the one in Melacca. I somehow agree to it. I found less coconut milk to be used in the cuisine. Well, this is the only Penang Peranakan restaurant I had, maybe it is too early for me to definite.

When you get into the restaurant, you can find a white board with the set lunch menu, near the cashier counter. From there you can see what are the choices for the set lunch. Of course, they do provide other choices on the menu as well.

With an addition of RM1.00 with the Set lunch, you will be served with a drink. The drink can be a herbal tea, or some special tea mixture, which did surprise me once [in a good way].

They do serve desserts in their special menu, almost every time I visit them I see a choice of dessert. Once we saw bobo-chacha (Coconut Milk Dessert) on the white board and my colleague from Singapore was so excited about it

Unfortunately, I am not a fans of dessert, so.. no comment on it.

Quite some time ago, we saw a menu with "4 pax set meal" and "6 pax set meal", finally there was an opportunity that we order for this set lunch.

If you have no idea what's nyonya food all about, you should have just order for this (provided you are at least group of 3 or 4). This is a combination where you can taste the sweet, sour, spicy, enhancing your taste buds and make you order one more bowl of rice!
